If you want to be able to flip through your books before purchasing (unlike buying online), the best place to buy English language books is at English Books, Stresemannstr. 169-167 (S-Bahn Holstenstraße). Most books are used, some are new, but all of them are marked down, some even half price. It’s a bit disorganized but sometimes you can find a real treasure in the hunt. There are so many different categories that you are certain to find something: classics, science fiction, romances, thrillers, true crime and other nonfiction, historical novels or history books, and so much more. Service is friendly and helpful with samples of tea or cookies on offer. If you haven’t been there in awhile, you may be pleased to know that you can now park for free directly adjacent to the store. And, the store has expanded to include a British grocery market. Hellmann’s Mayonnaise, Coleman’s Mustard (powder and in the jar or tube), Spam (!), Pop Tarts, Campbell’s and Heinz soups, a variety of marmalades and chutneys, Canadian bacon, and Canada Dry Ginger Ale along with lots of British specialties such as scone mixes, self-rising flour, Cadbury chocolates, digestives and Indian food ingredients. Call or stop by to place your special order for your favorite goods from England. Plans are to have plenty of canned pumpkin for next Thanksgiving.
