Down a tiny side road sits a small white bungalow with dark green shutters and overflowing window flower boxes. Is this New Hampshire or Carmel? No, this little gem with the rolling lawn dropping into the Krakower See is the privately owned Ich weiss ein Haus am See in Krakow am See in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

If you are looking for a peaceful, romantic, small hotel sheltered from the hustle and bustle of city life, then this is the place. You not only feel totally alone as you jump off of the pier into the clear, cool lake waters or nestle down in one of the Adirondack chairs sipping your coffee or sherry looking out over the lake, but also completely away from the stress of life. There are no honking cars or busy traffic; there is perhaps a small sailboat or fisherman in a small row boat; a group of cyclists or walkers making their way along the country road, but this is as close as you will come to "traffic"…unless of course, you are ready for dinner!

This special little hideaway's restaurant boasts one of only two Michelin stars in all of the neuen Bundeländern! And they do fill all 40 tables with a sophisticated crowd coming from all corners of Germany eagerly awaiting chef Micheal Laumen's fresh creations. These scrumptious creations are delightfully complimented by the fabulous wine list and the personalities of Petra König and her husband who are your hosts for the evening. This gourmet restaurant is the extra little treasure! If you have a special request you can call ahead and they will be sure to have lobster for you or plan a surprise birthday dinner complete with cake and flowers or any other special requests you may have.

This family owned and managed hotel of ten rooms and restaurant open since 1993 is a wonderful way to spend a weekend or few mid-week days. Request a room with a terrace. Only fireplaces are missing (perhaps another year), but they do have a canoe and can help to arrange fishing licenses or any other treats you may wish! The town of Krakow is a quaint old fishing village with a few old thatched fishing huts still clinging to its shores. And the town of Plau is a half hour away with all of its charm, history and fabulous, serious sailing! Ich weis ein Haus am See should not be missed. Happy relaxing!

Rooms with breakfast from EUR 130 per day. Dinner prix fixe from EUR 65 per person. For more information call 038457/23273 or see www.hausamsee.de.
