English Language Entertainment

Although not as English-friendly as Frankfurt or Munich, Hamburg still offers a lot of opportunities for entertainment in English. There are three theater groups that perform in English, two cinemas that offer films in English, three video stores that offer VHS videos in English, and an English talk radio station. There is also the possibility of buying satellite access for your TV to get English-language programming.

Click here for Adele R's article from the October/November 2004 Currents about renting English-language videos and DVDs and buying English-language books.

    Name: The Second

    Address: Bornstrasse 14, 20146 Hamburg

Since it is often difficult to find films you want to see in English at the theater, you may end up wanting to rent the video in English. Luckily, there are a few places where you can rent VHS videos in English -- one of our website sponsors, The First and The Second; and Bigger, Better, Faster, More, near Abaton Kino. Note, though, that European videos are on the PAL system, while videos from the U.S. are on NTSC, so you might have a problem renting videos here if your VCR is from the U.S. (and vice versa - you might have a problem watching videos from the U.S. if your VCR was purchased here). However, you can buy VCRs here that play both PAL and NTSC.

Another option now is to rent DVDs. It is much easier to find DVDs with an English-language option, because often even German DVDs have the original language option on them (thus, you can rent those DVDs from almost any video store near you). Some video stores even offer U.S. DVDs for rent (often before the films have even come out in the theaters here in Germany). Again, though, there can be system compatibility problems: U.S. DVDs use a different "code" than European DVDs. So, if you have a U.S. DVD player, you may not be able to watch European DVDs, and vice versa. However, it is possible to buy "code-free" DVD players, which can play DVDs from anywhere in the world (although you usually have to pay an extra EUR 50 or so to have your DVD player made "code-free").

*  English Talk Radio
