For more than a century, American political parties have used the national convention format to nominate their party’s candidates for president and vice president. The convention is also used as a forum to discuss differences within the party and to formulate a united party platform outlining the party’s positions on campaign issues. Throughout history, national conventions have had a major impact on American politics by creating turning points, instigating national movements and creating world leaders. Conventions bring thousands of visitors to the cities in which they are held. Politics aside, many social activities are organized around conventions including concerts, meetings and parties. And do not forget the politics going on outside the conventions: the protesters, the supporters and the counter-convention organizers. Here is a brief listing of the national conventions planned for this summer.

9th Libertarian National Convention
May 27-30 in Atlanta, Ga.
Candidates: Gary Nolan, Aaron Russo, Ruben Perez, Jeffrey Diket and David Hollist to name a few.
Presidential Nomination Winner: Michael Badnarik (Texas constitutional scholar)
Vice Presidential Nomination Winner: Richard Campagna (Iowa attorney)

Green Party National Convention

Candidates: David Cobb, Peter Camejo, Lorna Salzman and Kent Mesplay to name a few.
(Ralph Nader removed his name from the list of Green Party candidates to run on an Independent ticket. He has stated that he would, however, accept a Green Party endorsement if awarded it.)

38th Republican National Convention
