*  What's Playing in Cinemas (Movie Theaters) in Your Area

Below are some ways to find out what the film schedules are in Hamburg.

*  Morgan Post Film Schedules

Recommended by AWC member Nancy T. This popular site takes a long time to download in the daytime.

  1. Once the site opens, choose Plan 7 at the top and Filme & Kinos
  2. .

  3. In the "Kino" drop-down box, choose Grindel for the cinema that always shows English language films. (Try other cinemas if you want.)

  4. If you are looking for a certain film in original language, choose that film in the "Film" drop-down box. Films in original language will have OF or OmU after their names.

  5. Then click the Suche (Search) box.

*  www.hamburg.de Film Schedules

Recommended by AWC member Nancy T. This is the main website for the city of Hamburg. Remain in the German language if you wish to find film listings, as this section has not been translated into English.

  1. On the main page, under Kultur & Freizeit ("Culture & Leisure Time"), choose Veranstaltungen & Tickets ("Listings of Events & Tickets").

  2. Choose Kino ("cinema" or "movie theater"). The search feature is at the bottom of the page.

*  www.ufakino.de Film Schedules

Recommended by AWC member Aimee B. This site lists the films distributed by UFA to many of the local cinemas.

*  Hamburger Abendblatt

This daily newspaper, available at newsstands everywhere, has a special pull-out section on Thursdays showing the cultural events for the coming week, including the movie schedules. AWC member Becky T recommends this as a great way to practice reading German.

*  Hamburg 1 Teletext

If your television has teletext capability, and you want to practice your German, the station Hamburg 1 has an excellent set of pages that show what is playing this week (from Thursday to Wednesday) at each of the movie theaters in Hamburg and the surrounding areas. Page 517, for example, shows the films playing at the Grindel Theatre -- three of the films on their six screens are always in English. Recommended and used frequently by AWC member Judy W.

*  Local Cinemas Which (Sometimes) Show Films in Original Language

Hamburg has many cinemas, from small local theaters to grand multiplexes. Below we list those which at least occasionally show films in their original language.

*  3001 Kino

Shows a wide variety of films, occasionally in original language.

  • Schanzenstraße 75 (im Hof), 20357 Hamburg

  • Tel: (040) 43 76 79, Office: (040) 4 30 26 94

  • How: U3/S21-Bahn Sternschanze

*  Abaton Kino

Recommended by AWC member Nancy T. This is a simple to read film schedule site in German. The Abaton Kino shows a wide variety of international films, not just the blockbusters available at the multiplex cinemas. Many of the films are in their original language (not necessarily English or German), sometimes with German subtitles.

  • Allende-Platz 3, 20146 Hamburg

  • Tel: (040) 41 320 320, Fax: (040) 41 320 322

  • How: Bus 102 Grindelhof

*  Grindel Kino (always 3 English films)

Visited regularly by many AWC members, because Grindel Kino shows English language films on 3 screens.

  • Grindelberg 7a

  • Tel: (040) 44 93 33

  • Hotline: (040) 45 03 59 73

  • How: U-Bahn Hoheluft

*  Zeise Kinos

Shows a wide variety of films, occasionally in original language.

  • Friedensallee 7-9, 22765 Hamburg (Altona)

  • Tel: (040) 3 90 87 70

  • How: S-Bahn Altona, or Bus 150 Friedensallee

Many foreign (especially American) films are shown to enthusiastic German film-goers. Most of the time they are dubbed into German (deutsche Fasung) to make it easier for local people to enjoy them. If you are interested in seeing a film in its original language, check for one of the following abbreviations after the film title:

  • dtF - (deutsche Fasung) "German language version" (dubbed into German)

  • OmU - (Original mit Untertiteln) "original language with subtitles" (undubbed, but with German subtitles)

  • OF - (Original Fasung) "original language version"

  • OV - (Original Version) "original language version"

*  About the AWC Film Review Group

This is an active group within the American Women's Club. We receive invitations to press showings of films several weeks before the films open in Hamburg. We write reviews which are published in Currents, our club's monthly magazine, and in Top Info, the monthly English language booklet showing what's happening in Hamburg.
