English Theatre of Hamburg

News Release 10 August 2004

*  Dear Friends,

We just returned from London a week ago where we cast John Godber’s APRIL IN PARIS, the first play of the 2004/2005 Season. The actors (photos below) will arrive on 22 August and Clifford Dean will begin rehearsals with them the next day. This comedy will premiere on 16 September. The preview performances are on 13, 14 and 15 September. If you are interested in booking the low priced preview seats, you should do it soon before they are sold out.

Pamela Hall and Richard Burnip, the actors in APRIL IN PARIS, have both been here before in separate plays. We are delighted that they are eager to return to Hamburg. Besides being very talented, they are two of the nicest people we know. Pamela was in I OUGHT TO BE IN PICTURES last year, and Richard was in DON’T DRESS FOR DINNER the year before.

A highly respected friend and generous donor to the theatre recently told me that “people don’t know that The English Theatre of Hamburg hires professional actors.” I told him that they did, but he refused to believe me. So, just in case he was right, let me say it again here:

THE ENGLISH THEATRE OF HAMBURG HIRES ONLY PROFESSIONAL ACTORS.

This theatre is also the only professional English theatre in Hamburg and the first one to open in Germany. As far as I know, there is only one other professional English theatre with its own venue in Germany and that is The English Theatre of Frankfurt. There is, of course, the high quality amateur theatre, The Hamburg Players. And The University Players here in Hamburg do plays in English as well.

There is a way you could help us advertise the theatre and that is to order a “sticker” from us for your car with our web address: www.englishtheatre.de You can look at the following website to see how they can be placed on cars: http://www.ihr-schild.de/html/aufkleber_paket-sets_.html. I find that the best place to put the sticker is at the top of the back window of your car. It is impossible for the cars behind you not to see it.

If you would like one of these stickers to help us advertise, please send me your name and address and I will mail one (or more if you can use them) to you. We have only nine left at the moment, but I can easily order more. We can no longer afford to put up posters in the underground stations, so your help in advertising the theatre in this way would be greatly appreciated.

It is not too late to subscribe to our 2004/2005 Season. You can get the information about the plays we are doing and how to subscribe on our website. Remember, you can see four plays for the price of three if you subscribe. That offer is hard to beat and it helps the theatre raise income during the summer when we are not performing.

Sorry to include commercials in this newsletter. I don’t usually do that, but I got carried away.

We hope you will thoroughly enjoy the plays we have chosen for you this season.

Sincerely yours,

Robert Rumpf and Clifford Dean
